Our Best Laptops 2014

Budget Laptop

HP 2000 (less than $400)

hp-2000

Buy HP2000 on Amazon

Pros:

  • HDMI and VGA outputs
  • Comfortable and responsive keyboard
  • Low Price

Cons:

  • No USB 3.0 ports (has 3 2.0 ports)
  • Low resolution screen but on par with laptops in this price range

The HP 2000 won’t wow you with all the bells and whistles that are common on today’s laptops, but for a budget laptop the HP 2000 will take care of all of your basic computing needs.  The keyboard is responsive and very comfortable to use. As with most budget laptops the HP 2000 is equipped with a 1,366 x 768 display.  If you are looking for a budget friendly laptop than look no further than the HP 2000.

All Around Performer

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (starting at $1100)lenovo x1 carbon

Buy Lenovo X1 Carbon on Amazon

Pros:

  • Thin and light
  • Comfortable and responsive keyboard
  • Smooth, glass multitouch trackpad
  • Fires up in 10 seconds or less

Cons:

  • Average battery life
  • Hardware upgrades are limited

The X1 Carbon is one of the thinnest and lightest ultrabooks on the market.  The top cover is made of carbon fiber and true to the Lenovo way, the chassis is incredibly durable yet comfortable.  One of the features we like is the fast response time with a start up of 10 seconds which is above average for a full latpop.  The display is also outstanding with a matte finish on the 14-inch screen.  The display is colorful and bright with great viewing angles. Overall a great laptop which can be used for just about any function you will need in both business and pleasure.

Mac

Apple 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina (starting at $1299)apple macbook pro retina

Buy Apple MacBook Pro on Amazon

Pros:

  • 2,560 x 1,600 Retina display with wide viewing angles and a low glare finish
  • Only 11 second start up time
  • Battery life is above average
  • Incredibly well built and sleek design

Cons:

  • No discreet GPU option on the 13.3 inch model
  • Fans seem a bit on the loud side

As you would expect from Apple the finish and feel of the Macbook Pro is phenomenal.  It just feels like everything fits together perfectly.  There are lots of configuration options available between the 13 inch and the 15 inch.  The focus on the Retina display really lives up to the hype because the display on these machines is absolutely stunning.

Chromebook

Samsung Chromebook ($229.99)samsung chromebook

Buy Chromebook on Amazon

Pros:

  • Keyboard is comfortable and responsive
  • Long battery life
  • Fast start up time
  • Great price

Cons:

  • Not a full-blown operating system and doesn’t run iOS, Windows, or Android applications
  • Useless without an Internet connection

If you are looking for something that can perform the daily web related tasks then a Chromebook is a solid choice.  There are several brands who offer a Chromebook but our recommendation is the Samsung version.  This computer will meet the needs of a vast majority of consumers who only need to access the internet and check web based email.

Convertible

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro (starting at $999.99)lenovo yoga 2 pro

Buy Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro on Amazon

Pros:

  • Excellent ultrabook with 4 different positions between laptop and tablet
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Beautiful 13.3 inch, 3,200 x 1,800 display

Cons:

  • Average battery life
  • Exposed keyboard in tablet mode takes some getting used to

The Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro in laptop mode stands up well against any competition including the MacBook Pro and Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus.  When you consider the convertible capabilities of the Yoga 2 and this machine really sets itself apart.  Lenovo is aggressively implementing different options in the convertible laptop space and we feel the Yoga 2 Pro is the best so far.

Budget + Convertible

Asus Transformer Book T100 (Starting at $399)asus transformer t100

Buy Asus Transformer on Amazon

Pros:

  • Runs full version of Windows 8.1
  • Great battery life (12 hours)
  • Tremendous value for the already low price
  • Good webcam

Cons:

  • Keyboard feels a bit cramped
  • Display not as vibrant as other laptops but great for the price

The 10.1 inch Asus T100 combines an attractive IPS screen with a responsive keyboard dock.  The T100 is one of the lightest tablets around weighing in at 1.2 pounds.  with the keyboard dock attached the weight increases to 2.4 pounds.  While it may be borderline to classify this machine as a convertible rather than a tablet, we give it the nod simply because it comes with a full functioning keyboard and is running on the full 8.1 version of Windows.  All of these features made it our easy choice as the pick for this category.

Gaming

Alienware 18 (Starting $2,099)best gaming laptop

Buy Alienware on Amazon

Pros:

  • Exceptional performance in part because of the two state of the art Nvidia GTX 780M GPUs.  Also includes Intel’s 4th Generation “Haswell” Core i7 processor
  • Awesome lighting effects with 10 lighting zones which can be customized to 20 different colors
  • Magnesium alloy chassis with a solid and sturdy feel
  • Beautiful gaming rig with a 18.4 inch 1080p display

Cons:

  • Not a budget PC
  • Less than average batter life although for a gaming laptop you should always anticipate the need to be close to a power outlet

The Alienware 18 may put a bit of a dent in your wallet but the performance and look of this machine is phenomenal making it well worth the price.  Alienware continues to push the envelope and lead the gaming laptop industry.  The two GPUs make this a gaming laptop you should have on your short list.

Windows 7

Toshiba Satellite C55-A5245 (Sub $500)toshiba satellite c55

Buy Toshiba Satellite C55 on Amazon

Pros:

  • Intel Core i3 Processor
  • Sub $500 price tag
  • Runs on Windows 7 so if you are reluctant to upgrade to Windows 8 this is a great laptop to go with

Cons:

  • battery life is around 4 hours
  • some complaints of sticking keys although this is a minor complaint by just a handfull of owners

The Toshiba Satellite C55-A5245 is a very affordable machine running Windows 7 and still available for a great price.  This is perfect for a home computer or a student headed off to college.  This C55 series Toshiba offers everything a budget conscious buyer could ask for.
