Guide to the best laptop brands

Best Touch Screen Laptop

Best Touch Screen Laptop

The launch of Windows 8 pushed the popularity and desire for touch screen laptops to a whole new level.  I recall walking into a Best Buy with my non-techy wife and as she experimented with a HP Windows 8 laptop for the first time she immediately wanted to reach up and swipe the screen.  In less than a minute she declared, “I think I want a touch screen”.

My wife is an iPhone user so she is familiar and comfortable with navigating around by touching the screen.  The behavior of Windows 8 had her mind telling her to reach for the screen.  Like my wife, many consumers want the behavior of a tablet with the power of a desktop so we decided to take a look at the best touch screen laptops available right now.

This review is limited to those laptops which open and close like traditional laptops.  We did not include the hybrid or convertible laptops which provide a way for the laptop to feel like a tablet.

Best Touch Screen Laptop

ASUS VivoBook S550CA

asus vivobook s550caPros:

  • Premium brushed metallic texture making it a beautiful looking laptop
  • Above average audio from built-in speakers
  • Fast, fast, fast boot up time and even faster coming out of hibernate mode
  • Good durability; screen feels solid when being utilized

Cons:

  • Beautiful finish of the cover also captures a lot of fingerprints
  • Battery life is just average
  • Screen has a lot of glare

Overall we like the ASUS VivoBook.  The fingerprint issue is something we can live with but if this is something that bothers you then we suggest you look at one of the other options.  It comes at a very reasonable price for a touch screen laptop with an i5 processor, 500GB hard drive, and 24GB SSD.

HP Spectre XT Touch Smart

hp-spectre-xt-touch-smartPros:

  • One of the first Windows PCs with Thunderbolt
  • Solid multimedia benchmark scores
  • Intel Core i7 Processor giving it more power than other laptops compared
  • Backlit keyboard

Cons:

  • Several complaints about the wifi not picking up and/or dropping occasionaly
  • The screen protrudes out slightly from the bezel giving a perception of poor quality

There are a lot of things to like about this laptop, especially the ability to use Thunderbolt.  This can come in handy if your house or business has some mac users.  As we reviewed this laptop we were a bit surprised by the number of complaints about the screen and how it is designed.  While it doesn’t appear to have an effect on the performance of the laptop, it does leave consumers feeling like it was cheaply made.

best touch screen laptopSony VAIO T15 Touch

Pros:

  • Full HD 1080p display
  • 750GB Hard Drive with 24GB SSD
  • Multi-gesture touchpad which behaves the same as if you were touching the screen
  • Great features such as VGA and HDMI outputs, plenty of USB ports, and backlit keyboard

Cons:

  • Audio is just average compared to other laptops
  • Uses Intel integrated graphics instead of a discrete GPU

The Sony VAIO T15 is a solid touch screen laptop.  We really like the multi-gesture touchpad giving you the behavior of touching the screen without having to reach up and actually do it.  This system also gives you plenty of capacity with the 750GB Hard Drive but also the fast response and boot up time with the SSD.  In terms of the touch screen laptops we reviewed, the Sony VAIO T15 Touch was our editor’s choice.
